Charles Cyphers, Actor Known for 'Halloween' Franchise, Dies at 85

Character Actor Appeared in Dozens of Films and Television Shows

Charles Cyphers, the character actor best known for his roles in John Carpenter's "Halloween" franchise, has died at the age of 85. The actor died in Tucson, Arizona, on Aug. 4, his manager confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement.

Cyphers' Long and Storied Career

Born in Chicago in 1939, Cyphers began his acting career in the early 1970s. He appeared in small roles in such films as "The Godfather" (1972) and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) before landing his breakout role in "Halloween" (1978). In the film, Cyphers played Sheriff Leigh Brackett, the local law enforcement officer who is tasked with investigating the murders committed by Michael Myers. Cyphers would reprise the role in three sequels: "Halloween II" (1981), "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers" (1988), and "Halloween: Resurrection" (2002).

In addition to his work in the "Halloween" franchise, Cyphers appeared in dozens of other films and television shows throughout his career. He had notable roles in such films as "Escape from Alcatraz" (1979), "The Warriors" (1979), "The Postman" (1997), and "The Mist" (2007). He also appeared in guest roles on such television shows as "The Dukes of Hazzard," "The A-Team," and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

Cyphers' manager said in a statement that the actor died peacefully in his sleep. He is survived by his wife, Kim, and his two children, Megan and Adam.
